The Mass, like the Church herself, is both divine and human.
The Mass and the Church are guided by the Holy Spirit and made manifest in the community of believers by human signs and symbols, words, and gestures.
The center and focus of the Mass is the Eucharistic Sacrifice of Body and Blood which makes ever new the sacrifice of the Cross and which remains unchanged. Bu,t the expression of the sacrifice shows further life and growth in the Spirit.
The Mass like the Church always moves forward towards the coming of God’s Kingdom, the coming of our Lord, who is ever alive to us through the sacrament of the Mass. The Lord continues to be present in the Word of God, His assembly of believers, in the Priest and most completely in the Eucharist.
This, of course, doesn’t change. Only the words that express this mystery and the words that express our thanksgiving have become clearer and more precise to better reflect that mystery and that thanksgiving.
The mass continues to be both source and summit of our life. All things point towards it and all things flow from it, because Christ draws all to himself and then sends forth.
Remember, the Mass like the Church, is alive and growing, as it should be and needs to be. The Mass, again like the Church, is a sign that “IS” what it points to, the living reality of Jesus’ words -
“The Holy Spirit, that the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have told you.” Jn 14:26
